Events News & Events : July 18: Educational Meeting: Ametrines
Posted by Alyssa on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 (23:35:36) (252 reads)

Jim Hutchings will be giving a presentation on "Ametrines - very unique gemstones, with a love story!" Ametrine, a marketing name for a natural Quartz. Variety Amethyst and Citrine. The unusual geological conditions, in only one location, in Bolivia, produces this very expensive gemstone!

Our monthly educational meeting will as usual start at 7pm. Click the link below for more details about the monthly meeting and the address and directions.

There is a potluck as usual followed by the Monthly Challenge, the live rockhound auction and more!

This is a great night to come and see what the club is like if you are thinking about joining SMS and if you like it, you can join right there! Hope to see everyone there! :)

Our Junior Rockhound/Pebble pup Meeting will start at 6pm!

From Glenda: This month we are going to learn about fluorescent and phosphorescent minerals! If you are wondering what those fancy words mean: Fluorescent means that it glows under Ultraviolet light. Phosphorescent means that it glows in the dark. A phosphorescent mineral will glow briefly even after the UV light source is removed.

Please bring a snack for the Kids Potluck after their activity has concluded!

In Memoriam In Memoriam : A moment of silence in SMS for Greg Tidwell
Posted by Alyssa on Thursday, April 25, 2019 (18:17:27) (333 reads)

I have just heard that one of our members, Greg Tidwell, passed away on April 22, 2019.

We at SMS all send our deepest condolences and prayers to Greg's family at this time. He will be DEEPLY missed by his wife and two children, and all that knew him. Binx his daughter was also involved in the club for a little bit as well.

Greg was a member that had recently come back to the club and he really loved working with rocks, he was one of those that had a natural gift for working rocks and had a great eye for detail, and made lovely jewelry as well.

As we learn of any services being held for him - we will let everyone know.

So at this time please take a moment of silence for another rockhound that has left us all too soon.

Hug those you love close to you and tell them you love them.

heart beat

~Alyssa

This month our speaker is Rich Hussy from the Mother Lode Goldhounds, who is doing a presentation on gold mining. Rich has been panning since 1998 and will tell tales and maybe some secrets!

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our Junior Rockhound/Pebble pup Meeting will start at 6pm!
Please bring a snack for the Kids Potluck after their activity has concluded!
From Glenda: It was so wonderful to see so many of you at the March meeting! We talked about the mineral of the month, Wulfenite, and I enjoyed learning about and making miniature rock collections with you. I hope you are inspired to continue to collect miniature and thumbnail specimens in the future. When it comes to rocks, remember, bigger isn’t always better!
This month we will be learning about GOLD!
Join us for an activity with Justin Ferrell where we will learn the techniques of gold panning, using pyrite as our material. You will even get to keep the pyrite!
April is here and spring is in the air... which means warm weather that will be perfect for going on rockhounding field trips. Hooray! Spring is also a great time to go rock hunting because the rain can wash away sediments and reveal new layers of minerals. Alyssa and I will be planning some field trips just for you, to be announced at the May Jr. Rockhounds meeting.
Please make sure your membership is up-to-date so that you can join in on all the fun!
~~~~~~~~~~~~

After the presentation there is a potluck as usual followed by the Monthly Challenge, the live Rockhound Auction and more!

This is a great night to come and see what the club is like if you are thinking about joining SMS and if you like it, you can join right there! Hope to see everyone there! :)
